TLDR: Building your own cookie consent is a trap. Your scripts will still fire. Google will penalize your ads. Just use GetCookies.
The DIY Cookie Consent Trap
You're a vibe coder. You think: "How hard can it be? Just a banner with two buttons."
This is a trap. Here's what actually happens:
Day 1: "I'll show a banner and save to localStorage" Day 2: "Wait, analytics still fires before consent" Day 3: "Let me block scripts... why isn't this working?" Day 7: "I got a warning from Google Ads about Consent Mode" Day 14: "I'm just going to use a CMP"
Problem #1: Your Scripts Still Fire
Showing a banner doesn't block anything. By the time your JavaScript runs, tracking scripts have already executed.
To actually block scripts, you need to:
- Use type="text/plain" on script tags
- Intercept document.createElement
- Override appendChild/insertBefore
- Block document.cookie writes
- Handle dynamically injected iframes
This is not a weekend project.
Problem #2: Google Ads Will Penalize You
Since March 2024, Google requires Consent Mode v2. Without it:
- No remarketing audiences from EU users
- Conversion tracking breaks
- Smart Bidding underperforms
- You may get suspended from Google Ads
GetCookies has a registered Google CMP Partner Developer ID. DIY solutions don't.
Problem #3: Race Conditions
By the time your consent check runs, GTM and Meta Pixel have already fired. GetCookies uses a synchronous loader that sets consent defaults BEFORE anything else loads.
Problem #4: Third-Party Pixels Don't Listen
Meta, TikTok, Pinterest - each has its own consent API you must call. GetCookies handles all of them automatically.
