How to switch from Cookiebot to GetCookies

Switching takes one deploy: you replace the Cookiebot script with the GetCookies loader. Plan an hour to scan, configure and test. Visitors will be asked for consent again, because GetCookies does not read the consent Cookiebot stored.

Before you start

  • Export your Cookiebot consent records

    Download them from Cookiebot before you cancel. GetCookies does not import them, and you may need them as proof of past consent.

  • List your manual script markup

    Search your templates for data-cookieconsent so you know which scripts are pre-blocked by hand.

  • Check your plan needs

    If you use Google Consent Mode v2, IAB TCF or Cookiebot's geo rules, you need GetCookies Pro or higher. See pricing.

Migration steps

1. Create a GetCookies account, add your domain and run a scan. Review the categories it assigns.

2. Configure the banner: layout, text, languages and, on Pro, geo-targeting and Google Consent Mode v2.

3. Remove the Cookiebot script (uc.js, or the Cookiebot tag in Google Tag Manager) and add the GetCookies loader as the first script in your head, or install the GetCookies GTM template. See direct script install and GTM installation.

4. Keep your pre-blocked scripts. GetCookies picks up scripts marked type="text/plain" with a data-cookieconsent attribute, but the value must be a GetCookies category: rename Cookiebot's statistics to analytics. marketing works as it is.

5. Test: open the site in a private window, decline, and confirm nothing non-essential fires. The consent testing guide shows how.

6. Once it works, cancel Cookiebot.

What changes for you

  • Consent is collected again

    Returning visitors see the GetCookies banner once, because their Cookiebot choice is not carried over.

  • Registered CMP status

    Cookiebot is a registered IAB Europe CMP; GetCookies is not yet. If your SSPs require a registered CMP ID, keep that in mind before switching.

  • Pricing
