Install the consent banner on your Wix site with custom code

A complete guide to adding the GetCookies consent banner to your Wix site, covering the Wix editor, Velo (Wix Code), and troubleshooting.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • A GetCookies account with a domain configured for your Wix site URL.
  • Your Domain ID from the GetCookies dashboard (Domains > Widget Configuration).
  • A Wix Premium plan (custom code requires a Premium plan on most Wix setups).

Installation via Custom Code (Wix Dashboard)

Step 1: Open Custom Code Settings

  1. In your Wix dashboard, go to Settings > Custom Code (under Advanced).
  2. Alternatively, navigate to Marketing & SEO > Marketing Integrations > Custom Code.

Step 2: Add the GetCookies Script

  1. Click + Add Custom Code.
  2. Paste the following code:
html
<!-- GetCookies - Cookie Banner -->
<script src="https://app.getcookies.co/api/v1/widget/loader.js"
        data-domain-id="YOUR_DOMAIN_ID"
        async></script>
  1. Replace YOUR_DOMAIN_ID with your actual Domain ID.
  2. Configure these options:
  • Name: GetCookies Banner
  • Add Code to Pages: All pages
  • Place Code in: Head
  1. Click Apply.

Step 3: Publish Your Site

Click Publish in the Wix editor to make the changes live. The banner will not appear on the editor preview -- you must publish and view the live site.

Installation via Wix Editor (Embed Code Element)

If you cannot access Custom Code settings, you can use an HTML embed element. However, the Custom Code method above is strongly preferred because it loads in the <head>.

  1. In the Wix Editor, click Add (+) > Embed Code > Custom Element or Embed a Widget.
  2. Paste the script tag into the HTML field.
  3. Position the element on your page.
Warning: The embed element method places the script in the <body> rather than the <head>, which means tracking scripts may fire before the banner loads. Use the Custom Code method when possible.

Wix has its own basic cookie notification. Disable it to prevent conflicts:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Cookies in your Wix dashboard.
  2. Under Cookie Banner, set it to Off or Disabled.
  3. Save changes.

Running two cookie banners at the same time causes compliance issues and confuses visitors.

Handling Wix Apps and Integrations

Wix Analytics

Wix's built-in analytics use first-party data and are generally considered part of the site's operation. GetCookies does not block these by default.

Google Analytics (via Wix)

If you connected Google Analytics through Marketing & SEO > Marketing Integrations > Google Analytics:

  1. Wix injects the GA script automatically.
  2. GetCookies detects known Google Analytics scripts and blocks them until the user consents to the Analytics category.
  3. Run a scan to verify the script is correctly categorized.

Facebook Pixel (via Wix)

If you added the Meta/Facebook Pixel through Marketing & SEO > Marketing Integrations > Facebook Pixel:

  1. GetCookies detects the pixel script and blocks it until Marketing consent is given.
  2. Verify by running a scan and checking that the pixel appears in the Marketing category.

Other Wix Apps

Third-party Wix apps (chat widgets, review tools, remarketing tools) may inject scripts that are outside your direct control:

  1. Check if the app has GDPR/consent settings and enable them.
  2. Run a GetCookies scan to see what scripts the app injects.
  3. If scripts are not being blocked, contact GetCookies support with the scan results so we can add detection for those scripts.

Wix Velo (Advanced Developers)

If you use Wix Velo (formerly Wix Code) for custom development:

Load the Banner via Velo

You can dynamically load the GetCookies script in your site's masterPage.js:

javascript
// masterPage.js
$w.onReady(function () {
    const script = document.createElement('script');
    script.src = 'https://app.getcookies.co/api/v1/widget/loader.js';
    script.dataset.domainId = 'YOUR_DOMAIN_ID';
    script.async = true;
    document.head.appendChild(script);
});

Use the GetCookies JavaScript API in your Velo code:

javascript
// Wait for GetCookies to load
const checkGetCookies = setInterval(() => {
    if (window.GetCookies) {
        clearInterval(checkGetCookies);
        window.GetCookies.onConsentChange(function (consent) {
            if (consent.choices.analytics) {
                // Initialize analytics
            }
            if (consent.choices.marketing) {
                // Initialize marketing tools
            }
        });
    }
}, 100);

Custom Domain Configuration

If you use a custom domain with Wix:

  1. Ensure the domain configured in GetCookies matches your custom domain exactly.
  2. If Wix serves your site at both yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com, configure the primary one in GetCookies (whichever Wix redirects to).
  3. The Wix-provided .wixsite.com URL does not need separate configuration if you redirect it to your custom domain.

Verify the Installation

  1. Publish your site -- the banner does not appear in the Wix editor preview.
  2. Open your published site in an incognito/private window.
  3. Confirm the consent banner appears on the first page load.
  4. Open DevTools > Network and verify tracking scripts wait for consent.
  5. Accept consent and confirm trackers load.
  6. Navigate between pages and verify the consent state persists.
  7. Check your GetCookies dashboard under Consent Logs to see the test consent recorded.

Troubleshooting

  • Published? The banner does not appear in the Wix editor. You must publish and view the live site.
  • Custom Code placement: Verify the script is set to load on All pages in the Head section.
  • Domain ID: Confirm the Domain ID matches your site's domain in the GetCookies dashboard.
  • Wix cookie banner: Disable Wix's built-in cookie notification to prevent conflicts.
  • Premium plan: Some Wix plans restrict Custom Code. Verify your plan supports it.
  • Wix-managed integrations: Scripts added through Wix's Marketing Integrations panel are injected by Wix. GetCookies blocks most known scripts automatically. If one is missed, run a scan and report the issue.
  • Embed element method: If you used the HTML embed element instead of Custom Code, the script loads in the body and may not block scripts fast enough. Switch to the Custom Code method.
  • Third-party apps: Some Wix apps inject scripts that cannot be intercepted. Check the app's own GDPR/consent settings.
  • If the banner overlaps with a Wix header, sticky menu, or chat widget, adjust the banner position in your GetCookies dashboard.
  • Use Custom CSS: .gc-banner { z-index: 999999 !important; }
  • For Wix's built-in chat widget overlap, try switching the GetCookies banner to a position on the opposite side of the screen.

Changes not appearing after save

  • Clear your browser cache or use incognito mode.
  • Wix may take a few minutes to propagate changes after publishing.
  • If using a CDN, purge the CDN cache.
