Migration guide

How to switch from Complianz to GetCookies

On WordPress, switching means replacing one plugin with another and moving any scripts you added in Complianz's Script Center. For a site with a handful of such scripts, budget about an hour to scan, configure and test. Visitors are asked for consent again, because GetCookies does not read the consent Complianz stored.

Before you start

  • Keep your Complianz consent records

If you use Complianz's records of consent, export what you need before you remove the plugin. GetCookies does not import them.

  • List your Script Center entries

Complianz lets you add scripts under Integrations, Script Center. Copy each script and note its category before you deactivate the plugin.

  • Note your policy pages

If Complianz generated your cookie policy page, plan its replacement: the GetCookies cookie declaration (Pro and above) or the free cookie policy generator.

  • Check your plan needs

Consent Mode v2 default and update signals work on every GetCookies plan. IAB TCF consent strings and geo-targeting need Pro; more than one banner language needs Business. See pricing.

Migration steps

1. Create a GetCookies account, add your domain and run a scan. Review the category it assigns to each cookie.

2. Configure the banner: layout, text, languages and, on Pro, geo-targeting and the advanced Consent Mode settings.

3. Download the GetCookies WordPress plugin from your dashboard, install it and enter your domain ID. See the WordPress setup guide.

4. Move each Script Center script into your theme or a code-snippet plugin as <script type="text/plain" data-cookieconsent="analytics">…</script>, using analytics, marketing or preferences. See data-attribute blocking.

5. Deactivate and delete Complianz, then test in a private window: decline, and confirm nothing non-essential fires.

6. Replace or remove the old Complianz cookie policy page.

What changes for you

  • Consent is collected again

Returning visitors see the GetCookies banner once, because their Complianz choice is not carried over.

  • Registered CMP status

Complianz is a registered IAB Europe CMP (ID 332) and on Google's certified CMP list; GetCookies is neither yet.

  • Placeholders

GetCookies holds back script tags and does not show placeholders for blocked iframes the way Complianz does. Load embeds after consent with your own code, for example through the JavaScript API.

  • Price

For a single WordPress site Complianz Personal is cheaper per year. GetCookies pays off when you run sites on several platforms. See GetCookies vs Complianz.
