Squarespace Cookie Consent: Beyond the Built-in Bar

Date: March 28, 2026 Author: GetCookies Team Category: Platform Guide Reading Time: 8 min

Squarespace's native cookie bar is functional, but basic. It lacks granular category selection, geo-targeting, and detailed audit logs. For serious businesses, replacing it with a professional CMP is a must.

Here is how to implement GetCookies on Squarespace 7.1.

Step 1: Disable Native Banner

  1. Go to Settings > Website > Cookies & Data Privacy.
  2. Uncheck "Cookie Banner".
  3. Keep "Enable Cookie banner" checked? No, disable it entirely. We will handle the blocking manually.

Step 2: Code Injection

Squarespace allows code injection in the header.

  1. Go to Website > Website Tools > Code Injection.
  2. In the Header section, paste your GetCookies loader script.
<script src="https://js.getcookies.io/v1/loader.js" data-domain-id="YOUR_ID" async></script>

Step 3: Handling Squarespace Analytics

Squarespace's own analytics script is tricky. It is strictly first-party, but GDPR usually requires consent for it anyway.

To control Squarespace Analytics based on consent, you need to toggle the setting "Disable Squarespace Analytics Cookies" programmatically? Unfortunately, Squarespace doesn't expose a client-side API for this like Wix does.

The Workaround: You generally have to accept that Squarespace Analytics will run. However, you can control third-party scripts (Google, FB) effectively.

Step 4: Google Tag Manager (GTM)

The best way to manage tags on Squarespace is via GTM.

  1. Add GTM container code to Code Injection.
  2. Use the GetCookies GTM Template to control firing.
  3. Move all your marketing pixels (Meta, Pinterest) from Squarespace's "Marketing" settings into GTM.

Why move them? Squarespace's native marketing integrations don't listen to external CMPs. By moving the pixels to GTM, you gain full control. You can set them to fire only when the cookie_consent_update event occurs with ad_storage=granted.

Conclusion

On Squarespace, "Code Injection + GTM" is the professional standard. It bypasses the limitations of the platform and gives you enterprise-grade compliance.
