Client-side tracking is dying. Ad blockers, ITP (Safari), and ETP (Firefox) are killing data quality.
The solution is **Server-Side Google Tag Manager (sGTM)**. Instead of the browser talking to Facebook, the browser talks to *your server*, and your server talks to Facebook.
But how do you handle **Consent** in this architecture? If the data stream is server-to-server, how do you respect the user's "Reject" click?
## The Architecture
1. **Client:** GetCookies runs in the browser. User accepts "Analytics" but rejects "Marketing."
2. **Transport:** The Google Tag (gtag.js) sends a data stream to your sGTM endpoint (`analytics.yoursite.com`). Crucially, it attaches **Consent Signals** (`gcs` and `gcd` parameters) to the request URL.
3. **Server (sGTM):** The server container receives the request. It reads the consent signals.
4. **Routing:**
* *Signal:* `ad_storage=denied`
* *Action:* The sGTM container **drops** the Facebook CAPI tag.
* *Signal:* `analytics_storage=granted`
* *Action:* The sGTM container **fires** the GA4 tag.
## Why This is Better
* **Data Quality:** You bypass ad blockers because the request goes to your own domain (`yoursite.com`), not `google-analytics.com`.
* **Data Governance:** You can "redact" PII (like IP addresses or emails) *before* sending data to Google. You have full control.
* **Performance:** You move heavy vendor scripts (Meta, TikTok, Pinterest) off the browser. The user downloads less JavaScript.
## Implementation Steps
1. **Client Side:** Install GetCookies normally. It integrates with standard Consent Mode v2 automatically.
2. **GTM Server:** Enable **"Consent Overview"** in your sGTM container.
3. **Tags:** Configure your server-side tags (GA4, Meta CAPI) to require "Built-in Consent Checks."
## Conclusion
sGTM + GetCookies is the future of enterprise tracking. It gives you maximum data recovery (via first-party context) while maintaining strict legal compliance (via consent signal routing).
